What is Gunpla? A Beginner's Guide to Gundam Model Kits
- 4 min reading time
What is Gunpla?
Gunpla is an abbreviation for "Gundam Plastic Model". These are model kits based on the giant robots, also known as Mobile Suits, from the popular Gundam anime series. These kits are primarily produced by Bandai Namco and give fans and hobbyists the opportunity to build detailed Gundam models themselves.
Unlike traditional model kits, which often require glue and paint, most modern Gunpla kits are designed with a snap-fit system. This allows the parts to be easily clicked together, making Gunpla both accessible to beginners and challenging for experienced builders.

Why is Gunpla so popular?
Gunpla has grown into one of the most popular model-building hobbies in the world because it combines various aspects:
- Creative building
- Collecting
- Personalizing and customizing
- Displaying finished models
- Connection to the Gundam universe
You can build a kit straight out of the box or personalize it further with paint, decals, panel lining, and other modifications.

Do you need glue or paint?
For most modern Gunpla kits, you do not need glue.

The parts are already molded in different colors and are assembled using a snap-fit system. A good pair of model nippers is usually enough to get started.
Many builders later choose to:
- Paint their models
- Apply panel lining
- Apply decals
- Customize colors and details
These extra steps are completely optional.
The different Gunpla Grades explained
Gunpla kits are divided into different grades. These provide an indication of the size, complexity, and detail level of the model.
High Grade (HG)
- Usually 1/144 scale
- Very suitable for beginners
- Affordable
- Relatively quick to build
High Grade kits are often recommended as a first Gunpla kit.
Real Grade (RG)
- 1/144 scale
- Highly detailed
- More complex building experience
- Excellent articulation
Real Grade kits offer a lot of detail in a compact size.
Master Grade (MG)
- 1/100 scale
- Larger models
- Internal frame construction
- High level of detail and good articulation
Master Grade is popular among both intermediate and experienced builders.
Perfect Grade (PG)
- 1/60 scale
- Premium detailing
- Large size
- Extensive building experience
Perfect Grade kits are among the most impressive Gunpla models available.
What tools do you need?
To get started with Gunpla, you only need a few basic tools:
- Model nippers
- Hobby knife (optional)
- Sanding sticks or sandpaper (optional)
- Panel liner (optional)
Many beginners start with just a pair of nippers and expand their toolset later.
How long does it take to build a Gunpla kit?
The build time varies by grade and model.
| Grade | Average build time |
|---|---|
| HG | 1–4 hours |
| RG | 4–10 hours |
| MG | 6–20 hours |
| PG | 20+ hours |
Painting, detailing, and customization can significantly increase the total build time.
Is Gunpla suitable for beginners?
Absolutely.
Gunpla is considered one of the most accessible model-building hobbies for beginners. Thanks to the snap-fit system, you can get started right away with no experience.
Many hobbyists start with a High Grade kit and then develop skills such as:
- Assembly
- Detailing
- Painting
